Change pairing address

Open Change pairing address from the address controls in Clients. The address is the public name a new client uses to find this phone for pairing. Changing it is useful when you prefer another name or receive unwanted attempts.

Choose an address

The editor shows your current address and lets you type a replacement. Another suggestion generates a random three-word address; suggestions aren’t reserved until you submit one successfully.

An address must contain lowercase English letters, with a single hyphen between words. One word is valid, and custom addresses aren’t limited to three words. Spaces, digits, uppercase letters, and leading, trailing, or consecutive hyphens are invalid. The app uses the text as entered rather than correcting its case or spacing.

Change pairing address is available only when the entry is valid and different from your current address. Editing the field or asking for a suggestion doesn’t itself change the address.

Save, retry, and leave

Submitting contacts the relay to claim the new address. The editor disables changes while that request is running and returns to the app when the change succeeds.

If the address is already in use, edit it or request another suggestion. If the relay is unavailable or returns another error, the page displays the failure and lets you Try again with the same address. The app retains the unfinished attempt so it can retry it.

Going back leaves the editor and discards its unfinished local attempt. An address that has already been successfully changed stays changed. If a connection failure left the relay’s outcome uncertain, retrying the same address lets the app confirm the result.

Effect on clients and requests

A normal address change keeps the same device identity and pairing keys. Existing clients, secrets, instructions, history, and unfinished pairing attempts remain intact. Future pairing attempts use the new address.

Changing the address also preserves whether new pairings are paused. It doesn’t reject a request already waiting on the phone or free the place it occupies; reject that request separately if needed. See Clients for pausing new attempts.

If the app instead shows Device keys unavailable, it is recovering a lost device identity. Claiming an address in that situation creates a replacement identity and requires every client to pair again. See Device setup.
